Our History
On a day in 1893, five founding members, who recognized
the need for a church, gathered to construct their vision
of creating a place of worship that would not only be
accessible to the community but one whose foundation
would be erected upon a sense of kindred spirit. After
many heartfelt prayers this institution would later be
known as Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Devotion services
were held at a storefront on Main Street, pastored by
Reverend Henry Melvin Limas. As membership grew and the
Holy Spirit moved, services were moved to a rented hall
on Nelson Avenue. The visualization of our founding
fathers and Reverend Limas’ would soon come to fruition
as seven succeeding pastors, armed with purpose; would
build upon a dream and transform it into a reality.
Mount Olivet Baptist church, founded on the belief of
reconstructing and renewing minds through the teaching
and preaching of the word of God had now become an
integral force, and strong power in the community. Mount
Olivet has always been acknowledged as a community
outreach ministry. Many revere Mount Olivet as a learning
center, a home, a rock in the midst of storms and that
stronghold amidst turbulent times.
Overcoming challenges, adversities, and periods without a
pastor, Mount Olivet remained community focused.
Continuing to stand on the forefront for the citizens of
Peekskill, the greater good of humankind, Mount Olivet
fought for and towards the issues that plagued the
community.
In addition to their commanding presence and captivating
sermons; Carl B. Taylor, Reverend G. Franklin, and
Reverend Mark Churn, were also celebrated for their
community activism. Reverend Taylor was active in the
Civil Rights era and organized peace marches. He was one
of the first black males to be on the Peekskill School
Board. Reverend Wiggins was regarded as a great
humanitarian and leader; who built a legacy of
discipleship. During Reverend Wiggins’ tenure the Mount
Olivet Housing Corporation was formed. He was significant
in giving to worthy causes including missions, education
and excavation in Africa. Reverend Churn, Mount Olivet’s
13th Pastor was an extraordinary teacher and youth
organizer. Among his many accomplishments he is
celebrated for transforming the praise and ministry
experience at Mount Olivet to vibrant and relevant.
Under the leadership of Mount Olivet’s 14th Pastor,
Reverend Dr. Adolphus C. Lacey continues to forge forward
with a sense of urgency, expounding on the ideas and
principles of his predecessors. An intellectual,
educator, innovator, and intergenerational ambassador,
Dr. Lacey understands that during these troubled times it
is imperative that God’s people not forget from whence
cometh their strength. Charismatic, courageous, and
winning souls for Christ, Dr. Lacey stands defiantly on
the battlefield for the Lord. Bending but dare not
breaking. Equipped with full body armor and a fresh
unique message for God’s people, Dr. Lacey’s vision takes
Mount Olivet to a greater level of service and sacrifice.
Dr. Lacey embraces the principles of the Prayer of Jabez.
He strongly believes that God will enlarge Mount Olivet’s
territory; reaching out to individuals beyond the walls
of Peekskill. It is Dr. Lacey’s prayer that Mount Olivet
will be able to tap into resources and souls throughout
Westchester County, including the poor, sick, wounded,
and afflicted. Encompassing the young, old, white and
black; bridging the color gaps among God’s people,
creating a beloved community.
Mount Olivet Celebrates a New Season of excellence,
grace, vision, and God’s love. A church founded on the
teaching and preaching of God’s word, one hundred and
twelve years later, Mount Olivet continues to be a key
player in spreading the Gospel of Christ to the people of
Peekskill and beyond.
